Course Description
This course will provide updated information regarding chronic pain assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology, rehabilitation, interventional therapies and other pain-related topics. This symposium is presented by the Southern Pain Society, whose mission is serve individuals with pain by advancing research and treatment and increasing the knowledge and skill level of healthcare professionals working in pain management.


Target Audience
• Pain practice team members: physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, psychologists, office and billing staff

• Physicians and non-physician healthcare professionals desiring a review of the fundamentals of pain medicine

Continuing Education Credit
Physician Credit -
The University of Louisville Continuing Health Sciences Education office designates this educational activity for a maximum of 11.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with their participation in the activity. The University of Louisville School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Nursing Credit -
This program has been approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing for a total of 13.8 contact hours through the University of Louisville School of Nursing, provider numbers 3-0046-01-2013-38 (Saturday program - 9.6 hours), 3-0046-01-2013-38 (Sunday program - 4.2 hours), expiration date January 31, 2013. Learning Objectives
• Describe the neurophysiology of pain transmission to have a basic understanding of pain pathways.

• Describe pharmacological, interventional, psychological and rehabilitation techniques for the treatment of chronic pain so that the treatment plan can be enhanced and specified for each patient.

• Describe how to treat pain and suffering in the patient with terminal illness so that patients at the end of life can be comfortable.

• Cite the legal and regulatory issues involving pain medicine so that providers can remain within the law and feel comfortable in their prescribing habits.
