Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
Grand Rounds
June 4
"Reactive Oxygen Species and Matrix Metalloproteinases in Cardiovascular
Disease"
Timothy O'Toole, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
University of Louisville
Learning Objectives:
1) To understand the impact that pollutant exposure has on cardiovascular
physiology;
2) To understand the role of reactive oxygen species in regulating matrix
metalloproteinases in advanced atherosclerotic lesions;
3) To gain an understanding of what microRNAs are and how they contribute
to cardiovascular physiology.
June 11
"Oxidized Lipids and Atherosclerosis"
Sanjay Srivastava, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine
Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
University of Louisville
June 18
"Air Pollution, Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Endothelial Dysfunction:
A Common Mechanism of Increased Cardiovascular Disease Risk"
Daniel Conklin, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
University of Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky
Learning Objectives:
1) Review epidemiological associations between air pollution, environmental
tobacco smoke (ETS) and increased cardiovascular risk;
2) Describe the potential mechanisms by which air pollution and ETS exposures
mediate endothelial dysfunction;
3) Discuss ongoing studies implicating glutathione S-transferase P as
a determinant of cardiovascular system sensitivity to air pollution and
ETS exposure.
June 25
"Homocysteine to Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Translational Multidisciplinary
Approach"
Suresh C. Tyagi, M. Phil., Ph.D., FAHA, FAPS
Professor & Vice Chair for Research
Department of Physiology & Biophysics
Stodghill Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences
University of Louisville School of Medicine
Learning Objectives:
Will discuss:
1) Although high dose of hydrogen sulfide may be detrimental the normal
dose (nanomolar range) can be beneficial and cardioprotective;
2) Cystathionine gamma lyse (CGL) gene therapy can useful in many diseases
such as chronic heart failure, chronic renal failure and cerebral vascular
dementias, stroke and Alzheimer's disease;
3) High homocysteine causes many systemic vascular diseases leading to
renal and chronic heart failure.
